When Mining Becomes a Nostalgic Hobby

Why we can't let go of obsolete ASICs - the sentimental and practical reasons behind keeping 'dead' hash rate hardware like Antminer S9s.

HA

Today I was clearing out old ASICs from storage - Antminer S9s, Whatsminer M3s. Dust, noise, memories. These rigs no longer turn a profit even at our $0.03/kWh rate, but I just can't bring myself to trash them.

Why We Keep 'Dead' Hash Rate

1. Nostalgia. My first mining rig, my first satoshis.
2. "What if" - Bitcoin rockets to $100K and they become viable again.
3. Parts inventory - fans and power supplies still have life left.

My garage neighbor uses an S9 as a workshop heater - funny, but more efficient than an oil radiator.

Currently calculating ROI for new ASICs post-halving - the numbers don't look good. Maybe it's time to pivot? How do you decide when hardware is truly obsolete?
